This SCIENTIST is the Best QUESTIONER I've Ever Seen!👏🏻 Sadhguru with David Eagleman

46 000 wyświetleń 1,8M

Neuroscientist Dr. David Eagleman and Sadhguru address a question by a member of the audience, each from their unique perspectives.
Thinking outside the box is common to both of them. When renowned neuroscientist Dr. David Eagleman and Sadhguru met in Houston, Texas on April 2015, an inspiring conversation about the intersection between science and mysticism ensued. In this article, they address a question by a member of the audience, each from their unique perspectives.
Sadhguru: When you say, “I am not the body; I am not the mind” during Isha Kriya, it is not a philosophy or an ideology. It is not a slogan that you keep shouting within yourself and one day become converted. This is a subtle reminder that you add to your breath. Do not use “I am not the body; I am not the mind” to try and psych yourself. You are just adding a certain element to your breath. Otherwise, you are not able to notice your breath. Right now, you are only able to watch the sensations caused by the movement of the air, not the breath itself.
When you are inhaling, not necessarily is only inhalation happening - exhalation could be partly happening as well. Similarly, when you are exhaling, not necessarily is only exhalation happening - inhalation could be partly happening too. But you will not figure this until you notice the way of the breath. Though in many ways, physiologically, the breath is the basis of your life, most human beings have never really experienced their breath. Those who become conscious of just the sensations of the air passage claim all kinds of transformations, and that is true. Your sensations are the outermost layer of who you are. Knowing the sensations is most fundamental. Whatever you touch, whether you sit or stand, there are sensations. The breath is a more profound and subtle dimension which will not come into your experience easily.

Best thing I noticed was the scientist is listening carefully and speaking sensibly ...not like fools who just want to argue and always want to prove others as wrong

It's not proving wrong on anyone. As we all know that material, sprit n senses do happen by on its own. God mada in it. There is always a creator, that shape it into live. It cannot evolve, without the intervention of God. The guru cannot answer this aspect, but just want us to swallow all his says.

[vgl 2. Buch der Chronik, Kapitel 20, Verse 16 + 17]

The scientists is a role model to other scientists. He is a legend. He was approaching the conversation with an open mind. And doesnt try to argue his point of view. He has a proper conversation. This video should be used as an example of healthy debate in philosophy classes around the world.

@Kabir Singh if you dont agree to what is said then you don't agree, but to enter into an argument with a snark and arrogant attitude as a strategy just shows lack of character. Once again we return to my original comment, "proper conversation". You indicated in your original comment that you dont agree, now you are asking us what your point of view is. Why dont you tell us your point of view?

    2. Frey Vestergaard

@JP I'm curious what you think about split brain patients? These people's brains have been split in two (left and right hemispheres), and to the best of our ability, it looks like there are now two consciousnesses in the same body, each having their own experience, beliefs, desires and abilities. The consciousness that was there before is not the same as after. When the two halves can't communicate with each other, it seems like a unique consciousness exists in each half. I remember a case of a split brain patient who was asked whether he believed in God, and the right half of his brain answered yes, but the left half answered no and that they were an atheist. The consciousness that was there before the brain was split; is it still there? Did it split into two parts because the brain was split into two parts? If so, doesn't it imply that consciousness is reliant upon the brain's condition? If we damage a specific part of the brain, we can lose a specific ability, like the ability to read or understand language, or the ability to recognise faces. We can change our personality from damaging the brain, and we can lose our memory from damaging it. We also understand how many processes in the brain relate to our experience and abilities. You can change some processes in your head from taking a drug, which in turn changes your consciousness. If you make it so that the processes can't communicate with each other (like with split brain patients), then you get two separate consciousnesses, each with different abilities relating to the differences between left and right hemispheres. If my brain could be split up in 10 pieces, would I still be there if there are 10 separate consciousnesses in my body? And now we destroy 5 of the pieces. Am I then still there? It would feel very weird for me to say so. Then we destroy all the pieces, and suddenly my consciousness is back? I'm able to think and feel and even do math? If I lost any memories from damaging my brain, did I then regain those memories from damaging the rest of the brain? Or would you say that my consciousness still exists at that point, but it's not the same as what it's like now?

    3. JP
      Miesiąc temu

@Frey Vestergaard - Consciousness is energy, so yes it can exist for all eternity. The brain is simply a physical vessel for that energy to reside in temporarily for one lifetime.

While I totally agree with your claim, I don't think any of them changed their views on anything. The scientist was just trying to understand Sadhguru's perspective, and I think Sadhguru was trying to educate the scientist. I wish they had talked more about consciousness and the brain though. For example what Sadhguru's perspective is on whether he can exist without his consciousness in general, and whether his consciousness can exist without his brain.

I think this is beauty of Hinduism. It has way of life practiced by Rishis(also called ancient scientists). Its good to see thousands of foreigners eager to explore the life the way Sadhguru did. Real beauty is, it doesn't asks any individual to change the religion. It is for the people who usually mock the Hinduism and try to humiliate it.

they skipped through the first 48 minutes and missed the last almost 2 hours! the scientist has great points, and the guru and he agree on MOST! Neither is inherently correct, and, only through connection if both, can we truly understand reality. Quantum physics is the connection. Learn as much as you can about it, and research the "Double Slit Experiment with Meditators" and it proves both are working together. this is not an "us vs. them". Nothing is. It's always an "Us Learning about Us"

Sadhguru's message here is wisdom and people can learn a lot in the state of mind he speaks of. I understand Dr. Eagleman's opinion because it is difficult to find the connection between neurology and spirituality. I think it requires combining the subjects of...neurology, physics, and spirituality....and a bit of biology. To escalate our understanding of the world and universe we must start combining the information we have collected instead of getting more nuanced in fields of study. We have gathered all these puzzle pieces and so now we need to put them together, not find more ways to categorize and study them.

What I find humbling is the fact that Sadguru says he’s not a scientist, but I find that the way he approaches the explanation of our human inner mechanics both logical and scientific. I believe he has a brain of a scientist, but has the wisdom to go beyond the limitation of modern science to explore the depths of human spirituality.

I first want to say i could watch these two very well spoken and educated men talk for hours (if my body allows lol) I was brought up Christian but eventually around 14 or 15 found too many problems with the church, and logical issues with the biblical scriptures and hypocritical people that i aboned it all in pursuit of science. Most conversations between religious scholars and scientists end in argument or they deny science or evolution. If i had been raised in let's say, Hinduism I think i could have remained spiritual as well as pursue science. In 100 years it wont matter much either way so why not find some spiritual fulfillment? Because it may be wrong? It may be lying to ourselves to know fully explain everything in that method? We lie to ourselves all the time, our view of the world, our very notion of reality is a limited illusion constructed by our brains of the 60% or so of sensory data we take in. Lately i have been engaging in meditation and trying to be more aware and tolerant of the situations and people in my life and i wish i would have been exposed to it sooner.

@RAM SHARMA yes i have finished 3rd, 7th and 8th Chapters coz my friend told me to read those first. He had read it so it was better for me to have his guidance. It is so thoroughly written. The moment i feel that the question might not be answered by Krishna to Arjun, he asks a counter question which comes to me as well. Such a beautiful book. I read 5 verses or maybe even 15 sometimes. I aim to finish the Gita by the end of Next Month. Coz i am reading the Ramayana as well so it is slow process for me. I am inclined to say that Ramayana is what i like better than The Gita. It's my perspective as the Story of Lord Rama piqued my interest. Tell me if you have any movies or shows for me to see based on Ramayana. Thanks💜

This conversation was really nice to listen to ❤👌🙌. In my opinion, the mystical is what we lack. This "lack" of the mystical in our everyday existence is reflected in the way we live on this planet. We have made ourselves comfortable by giving too much importance to the physical quality of life. And on closer inspection, we have simply forgotten an essential part of our existence. The spiritual part of us hasn't changed much since we left caves as "no longer cavemen". We have somehow forgotten our direct physical reference point, this planet. This development requires a bit more mysticism to "understand" the consciousness of being beyond the limits of this planet.

I fundamental error we make is the use of the possessive pronouns that we use to describe us within our shared reality. Terms like "my" when we describe our individual attributes like "my mind", "my body", etc. The idea that we own or possess a mind, a body, etc. is flawed. The "we" that we think we are is an apparent amalgamation of many things that work in unison to make a way for the self or perception thereof to emerge.

Love the respectful and quiet exchange of thoughts, a pleasure to watch! 6:33 he nailed it. His counterpart skipped over it by using a fallacy argument of someone who is born blind, rather it it is about the change you register like the blind learning to see, which potentially separates the I from ego (how do you respond to that change, like a victim, like gods miracle etc), physical body (how it responds to change, e.g. a headache because of the increase of input) etc. The I is still registering that change and you can observe yourself, as we find ourselves doing at times almost like an external observer. That is the I he is referring to. People who loose control over their faculties, if not instantaneously, at first register that change, which makes it exactly that terrifying experience we all fear.

We began with the fundamental question, are “we”, or the fundamental idea of self, of I, “me”, something that is beyond merely the physical body and the brain (of thought and emotion). It was a very good question that was not answered fully by Sadhguru. Instead, he diverted the conversation and made multiple contradictory statements. On the one hand he claimed that such a “me” could exist even in the face of a brain injury, or disease mocking mental illness as somewhat of personal character weakness or a business these days (a very dangerous statement that is completely unsupported by clinical evidence and lived experiences of many people with mental illnesses and disorders worldwide). Sadhguru appears to claim that some kind of self exists despite changes in a brain. He does not explain how this could be possible or how it would be possible. At the end of the video he concludes that science only sees the physical and in essence misses the “fruit” of existence while only seeing its peel. If that peel is so much clearer to a mystic such as Sadhguru then it’s essence and exact nature should be better explained! What exactly is consciousness if it is beyond a brain and the physical elements within a body. If consciousness does not need a particular body why does it attach itself to one at all? If it continues after death where does it go without the body? Is such consciousness an absence of thought? Of personality? Is it a form of energy? If yes then I would have loved to understand exactly what such claims made to actually mean. There is absolutely little positive outcomes to challenge science and question its limitations! Science is NOT flawed, it is simply the best form of inquiry that we have got as a humanity. It is accountable, it relies on testing and reliable results, collecting data and proving a fact or discovering a truth. As such we can rely on it much more than a simple blind trust on a word of a self proclaimed “mystic” who cannot even acknowledge he has naturally been influenced by culture tradition and religion in growing as a human. We are human, we are limited and yet as an intelligent living being we will continue to question, experience and most of all tell some great stories. I choose the side of the Neuroscientist David Eagleman simply for asking the right questions here. 🙏🏽

Loved each and every word written by you and i agree with you. Sadhguru never answers any question in a demonstrable and explained way. Hence, the listener is left confused/speechless because of the irrelevant nature of his explanations. I am sure he would have answered your questions (in this comment) in the same way as he did with this scientist. I also choose the side of the scientist. I think he was asking the right questions and sadhguru failed to answer them but successfully bypassed the questions just like always.

Wow! This man makes two impressive points about the modern society: 1. Nowadays indeed, we have a very bad science, because the academy has become an entire enterprise interested in rankings and forcing scientists to publish at so huge speed that there's no even time for doing a good research. 2. Another point, we are nowadays so attached to external values, but we are not happy. We have a very good quality of life in physical terms, and a poor miserable life in spiritual terms, leading to the unprecedented growth of mental issues across the world. It's a paradox.

There are many examples of people, whether through injury or birth defect, do not have full mental faculties. That is to say some of them are born this way and some become this way due to illness or injury. Yet, they experience what's being called "the Golden Hour." For a short period before their death, they suddenly become fully aware of who they are, who their family is and where they are and have full conversations with surrounding family members. Like magically wake up just to say goodbye. Even people who have never communicated with anyone.

These talks are great for bringing the common awareness towards Realization. But intentional actions are required for anyone who wishes to truly comprehend Sadhguru's words. A talk like this exists only to show you there might be something else to know than just science and the physical world; action is required to begin understanding, and it may take a while to really understand. There are a series of profound "aha" moments that happen when you begin to tear down your attachments to the physical, but we in the west have no framework from which to do such a thing. If you are seeking more, I might suggest the "Bhagavad Gita" - it is a direct, concise guide for "what to do if you want to SEE." It requires an effort that most will probably give up on; their hold on the physical world makes it impossible, much like Neo in the scene where Morpheus is telling him to "just jump." He can't do it. He only trusts his senses.
